U. S. Complete Shooting Dog Futurity
By Yvonne McKeag

The fourteenth annual U.S. Complete shooting Dog Futurity was held on March 18th through the 20th at the Dick Cross Wildlife Management Area in Boydton, VA.  This year the Futurity was judged by Bill Fowle from Gretna, VA and George Gundrum from Pine Grove, PA.  This year’s entry was the largest we have had in several years with nineteen dogs entered and eighteen coming to the starting line.  The judges commented that several of the dogs put down great performances making it hard to separate some of the dogs.

Garnering top honors this year was Triple L’s Brute a pointer male who ran in the seventh brace Saturday afternoon.  He is owned and bred by Leland Laymon and handled by Tony Bingham.  Brute is out of Island Grove Brute and Triple L’s Cate.  He scored his first find at 14 showing his style and manners.  He scored again at 34 in the Pine Islands and again at 40 on the last hedge row to the finish.  He scored two more times on the final hedge row finding the elusive birds that several of the others had bypassed.  His performance on the ground was exciting to watch putting down a strong race from beginning to end and handling well for Tony.

In second was Richfield Tootsie, a female pointer, owned by James Frost and bred by Monique Giuliano.  She was handled by Robert Ecker, Jr.  Tootsie ran in the fifth brace and scored three stylish intense finds with a strong forward race.  She is out of Chasehill Little Bud and Richfield Kate’s Candy.

The third and fourth place dogs are litter mates bred by Robert Baker and out of Night Hawk and Pecan Grove Bonnie.

The third place dog was a pointer male owned and handled by Warrant Parrott, Main Attraction.  He was bred by R. N. Baker.  She ran in the sixth brace.  She scored two stylish finds and a true stop to flush.  She ran a strong race and was wide open at the end.

The fourth place dog was Pecan Grove Amen, a pointer male owned, handled and bred by R. N. Baker.  He scored two nice finds and had a nice race to the front.

Two of this year’s Bob Lee Classic Shooting Dog Classic winners previously placed in the Futurity.  In the saddle for the Shooting Dog Classic were Bill Fowle and George Gundrum. There were 27 starters for this classic.   Taking first was Porter Meadow Elroy handled by Robert Ecker and owned by Jim Bush.  Two years ago Elroy took second place in the futurity.  In second was Elhew Signature also handled by Robert Ecker and owned by Pedrag Kazic.  Signature scored a third place finish in last year’s futurity.  Taking third was Indian Creek Shine owned and handled by Garry Malzone.

This year in the saddle for the Puppies was Ray Rinker and Yvonne McKeag.  We had thirteen young hopefuls.  Hard Rayn Ruby took first with handler Jerry Raynor.   She is owned by Doyle Hardison.  In second was Hales Lady Jenna handled by Larry Wade and owned by C. Hales.  Taking third was Indian Creek Dallas, owned and handled by Garry Malzone.

I would like to thanks those that helped me put on this trial.  My son Kenneth Haase who took leave from Fort Drum to plant birds and everything else I needed help with.  Ray Rinker, and Jim Bush who also helped plant birds.  Swan Fowle who helped in the kitchen when I couldn’t be there.  I would also like to thank all the participants, owners, handlers, breeders for without their support we would not have the futurities.

THE RUNNING

The first brace was Dixie Thrill (Wade) and Smoke Rise Faye (Terrell).  Dixie scored two intense finds with a nice forward race.  Faye had her running shoes on and was out of pocket for a time in the middle but returned for a nice finish.

The second brace was Pecan Grove Contender (Baker) and Indian Creek Riptide (Malzone).  Contender had two nice finds with a big race to the front.  Riptide had an unproductive, one back and a nice find and put down a nice race.

The third brace was Richfield Gypsy Rose (Ecker) and Triple L’s Ginger (Bingham).  Rose was very athletic but was up at 30 for not pleasing her handler.  Ginger ran a nice race and handled well.

The fourth brace was HiRollins Eye Catcher (Parott) and Indian Creek Cassandra (Malzone).  Catcher had one stylish find and then had an unproductive.  Cassandra had a mind of her own and chose her own course to run.

The fifth’s Bob’s Miller Seal (Casey) and Richfield Tootsie (Ecker).  Seal had two nice backs and ran a nice forward race.  Tootsie was described earlier.

The sixth brace Hard Bargan Pete (Crandall) and HirRollins Main Attraction (Parrott).  Pete was up at 15. Attraction was described earlier.

The seventh brace was Cas Tiny (Ecker) and Triple L’s Brute (Bingham).  Tiny put down a snappy ground race but was lost at 21 and found after time on point to the extreme edge of the course.  Brute was described earlier.

The eighth brace was Pecan Grove Amen (Baker) and Racey Kate (Drew).  Amen was described earlier.  Kate scored a back and put a nice race.
